Frequently asked questions
How do these countdowns work?
Each countdown runs in your browser and counts down to midnight (or the stated time) in your own time zone. The dates are calculated from official rules, such as “the fourth Thursday of November” or the position of the Sun and Moon, and updated when organisers announce changes.
Which time zone do the countdowns use?
Your own. The site reads your device’s time zone, so a countdown to New Year ends at midnight where you are, and exact moments such as a solstice or an eclipse are shown in your local time. The time zone in use is displayed under each countdown.
What is the difference between days, sleeps and hours?
Days give the number of calendar days left, sleeps count the nights (a kid-friendly way to wait), and the hours and minutes pages show the same countdown in smaller units for the final stretch.
Can I make a countdown to my own date?
Yes. Use the countdown timer, or the birthday, baby due date, wedding and retirement countdowns. Your dates stay in your browser and you can share a link.
