About CountLeap
CountLeap shows live countdowns to holidays, launches, sports and everyday moments. Learn how every date is calculated or verified, and how time zones work.
What CountLeap is
CountLeap is a free countdown site with 190+ events, from Christmas and New Year to game launches, sports finals, religious festivals and the end of the month. Every countdown ticks live in your browser and is shown in your own time zone.
How the dates are worked out
- Fixed dates (Christmas, Halloween, Valentineโs Day) follow their calendar date every year.
- Rule-based holidays (Thanksgiving, Motherโs Day, Memorial Day) follow rules such as โthe fourth Thursday of Novemberโ, so they are correct for every future year.
- Easter and related days are computed with the standard Gregorian computus, and days such as Good Friday, Ash Wednesday and Pentecost are counted from it.
- Lunar and lunisolar calendars (Ramadan, Eid, Hanukkah, Rosh Hashanah) use the Islamic Umm al-Qura and Hebrew calendars. Islamic dates can differ by a day in practice because of moon sighting, and each page says so.
- Astronomy (solstices, equinoxes, full and new moons) is calculated from orbital formulas, so the moment is accurate to within minutes.
- One-off events (game and movie launches, tournaments, award shows) are checked against the organiserโs or publisherโs official announcement. These can change, and we update them when they do.
Time zones
Countdowns use your deviceโs time zone. A countdown to New Year ends at midnight where you are, and exact moments such as a solstice or an eclipse are shown in your local time. The time zone in use is shown under each countdown.
Estimates and corrections
A few dates are estimates by nature, such as the typical last day of school in each US state, Amazon Prime Day or the date of an Islamic holiday before the moon is sighted. These are labelled on their pages. If you spot a wrong date, tell us and we will fix it.
